Sports and movie stars paired up with some the world’s top professional golf players on Thursday for the Dunhill golf tournament at St Andrews in Scotland.
The championship teamed Hollywood heavyweights Michael Douglas and Samuel L Jackson with European professionals Darren Clarke and Colin Montgomerie. "I hear Darren is a great guy," said the Fatal Attraction star of his partner for the event. "I've brought him a gift of a couple of cigars." Darren was equally complimentary towards his partner. "I'm a big fan," he said. "My favourite films of his are Wall Street and Traffic."
Prince William, who is currently enrolled on a History of Art course at St Andrews University, was also on hand at the celebrity event. He and a group of six pals, including a pretty, dark-haired girl, watched the action as they lunched in the Dunhill pavilion.
The event takes place on three courses, with each team playing St Andrews Old Course, the acclaimed Kingsbarns coastline greens just outside the ancient Fife town, and the famously difficult Carnoustie links just across the River Tay.
Shaft star Samuel L Jackson loudly joshed his fellow celebrity when 57-year-old Michael hit his first drive at Carnoustie into a stream. “In the hole!” he yelled from the sidelines. Other stars from the world of entertainment and sport playing included Notting Hill star Hugh Grant, cricketer Ian Botham, race champion Nigel Mansell and tennis ace Boris Becker.
Before the event got underway organisers were faced with an anthrax scare when a suspect package was delivered to the post room of the university where William is studying. Police immediately sealed off the area but it was later dismissed as a hoax.
