A host of celebrities including Oscar winner Michael Douglas and “It” girls Lady Victoria Hervey and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson turned out for a charity auction in London on Monday, bidding on everything from U2 frontman Bono’s sunglasses to a t-shirt Madonna sported during her recent Drowned World tour. Pledges from the Basic Instinct star, amongst others, helped push the evening’s total raised to over £100,000 – all in aid of the Cancer And Leukaemia In Childhood (CLIC) organisation.

“It was an absolutely fabulous night with a great result,” said a spokeswoman for the appeal.

Michael Douglas, who donated a piece to the charity alongside wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, would likely agree. The Hollywood icon successfully bid £1,000 for a self-portrait of musician Phil Collins.

Other items under the hammer included a guitar signed by high-singing supergroup the Bee Gees, which sold for £4,200. The hand-written lyrics to Chris DeBurgh’s smash Lady In Red drew an impressive £3,200. An embroidered dress Donatella Versace wore to the Oscars took in £14,000. And the Catherine Malandrino-designed t-shirt Madonna wore while riding the mechanical bull on her recent world tour fetched £9,500.

All proceeds from the event – hosted by Marie Jordan, wife of Formula One boss Eddie Jordan – will go towards CLIC’s Home From Home appeal, which provides housing for the families of children forced to live away from home during cancer treatment.
