Tennis ace Steffi Graf gave birth to a healthy baby boy early on Friday morning, three weeks before the tyke's scheduled arrival. Doctors delivered 5lb 14oz baby Jaden Gil, born to newlyweds Andre Agassi and Steffi, at Valley Hospital in Las Vegas.
“This is the proudest day of our lives,” they said in a joint statement. “We are so blessed and thankful for the gift of our son. We look forward to the joys and challenges of parenthood.”
The high-profile couple wed last week in a private ceremony in Las Vegas, ending months of speculation surrounding when they would tie the knot. Insiders suspected the two would wait until after the New Year before making it official. However, German magazine Bild reports the pair pushed forward the nuptials after doctors told Steffi she might give birth early. Close friends of the couple have refused to comment on the reasons behind the speedy ceremony.
The civil wedding, conducted by District Judge Michael Cherry, was a hush-hush affair witnessed just by each of their mothers. Andre’s sister found out about the nuptials from a message on her answering machine after returning home from a Pearl Jam concert. Ditto for Andre’s father, who first heard the news when coming home from work last Monday.
Steffi and Andre first started dating back in 1999 shortly after he took home the French Open title – a win which made him only the fifth male player in tennis history to capture all four of the Grand Slam titles. The two announced they were expecting a child in July and now divide their time between Andre’s Spanish-style palatial home in Las Vegas and their new $23 million San Francisco estate.
