Naked Chef Jamie Oliver ranked alongside Hollywood heart-throbs Ben Affleck and George Clooney in the just released American GQ Men Of The Year Awards. The cheeky British TV presenter scored for Best Chef in the sixth annual poll, proving a “little blond-haired Essex boy” can take on the likes of Traffic hunks Benicio Del Toro and Benjamin Bratt.
“The 26-year-old has no time for those fussy French techniques,” reports the famed men’s mag of dad-to-be Jamie. “Instead he gathers up fresh, unadultered ingredients (naked if you will) and casually ‘whomps’, ‘whacks’ and ‘bashes’ them into meals to be served to his slightly sodden pals at the end of the show.”
Although he admits he has enjoyed his rise to fame, Jamie says there is a downside to being recognized everywhere. “There have been a couple of occasions where big, big, big blokes see me on the streets and are like: “Oi, Oliver, come here’,” he says. “I’ve made their lives hell, as their wives have been like: ‘If this little blond-haired Essex boy can cook then why can’t you?”
Other celebs to receive awards included The West Wing hunk and Brat Pack alum Rob Lowe, LA Confidential writer James Ellroy, Irish rockers U2, and Gucci wunderkind Tom Ford.
In recent years the GQ Awards – voted for by magazine readers – were handed out in a glitzy, star-studded bash in New York City. However, in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the US, plans for a presentation ceremony were scrapped.
British GQ announced its Men Of The Year in September, featuring Colin Firth for Best Actor and Sir Elton John for Lifetime Achievement, among others.
