R&B crooner R Kelly and the ladies of Destiny’s Child scored at Tuesday’s Billboard Music Awards, a high-wattage evening featuring a provocative performance by Britney Spears and an all-star rendition of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On.

R Kelly’s top-selling disc TP-2.com was named R&B Album of the Year, and the celebrated singer took home six awards in all, including R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter of the Year.

“It’s just a constant reminder of how hard work paid off,” said R Kelly.

Destiny’s Child snagged five trophies at the Las Vegas event, including the coveted Artist of the Year prize and the Hot 100 Singles Artist of the Year gong. The trio, who just announced they’d be taking to a break to pursue solo projects, also picked up Soundtrack Single of the Year plaudits for Independent Woman, Part One, the girl power anthem from Charlie’s Angels.

Janet Jackson was honoured with a special Artist Achievement Award by the music mag, appearing on the MGM Grand stage with rap impresario-cum-mogul Sean “Puffy” Combs. Ms Jackson first appeared at the famed casino when she was just seven years old. “I never dreamed all these years later I would be back here to receive such an honour,” she said.

Other winners include Shaggy for Male Artist of the Year and Alicia Keys for Female Artist of the Year.

Awards at the annual event, which aired live on US network Fox, were based on record sales and airplay.
