Brian Harvey, from Nineties boy band East 17, left hospital on Wednesday after being operated on for a head wound sustained during a vicious attack with a bladed weapon the previous day.The 27-year-old vocalist was leaving The Works nightclub in Nottingham with two female fans when he was set upon from behind by four or five men. Police are unsure of the motive for the incident. “There was an altercation during which Mr Harvey was struck on the back of the head causing him a serious injury,” said Detective Inspector Dave Hoare. “It could have been with an axe, a knife or a machete. We do not know at this stage. This was a particularly nasty and totally unprovoked attack.”

The singer’s family and his girlfriend, model and TV presenter Emma B, had dashed to be at the pop phenomenon’s bedside following the attack. At the time Emma was too upset to talk about his condition, but the star himself, who has undergone a skin graft for the wound to his scalp, has put on a brave face. “I’ve had a few knocks in my time and bounced back from them. I will bounce back from this,” he insists.

“Doctors expect Brian to make a full recovery," said a spokesman for the singer.

The East 17 frontman was sacked by the other members of the outfit after making controversial comments about ecstasy. They were later reunited, however, and enjoyed two hits. Brian has recently been back in the charts with Loving You a collaboration with Wyclef Jean
