Striking TV chef Nigella Lawson says she is looking forward to her forties. In a recent candid magazine interview the 41-year-old, self-styled domestic goddess explains: “I don’t mind ageing. I found my twenties very hard, my thirtes easier and I’m hoping that my forties will be even better.”

Moving into a new decade has enabled her to find a true sense of happiness she admits: “I’ve had hugely unhappy times throughout my life, but I stopped being a depressive in my early thirtes. These days I feel that I have a great capacity for happiness. I can take pleasure in very small things.”

In the same interview Nigella also talkes about her husband, the late journalist and broadcaster John Diamond, who died of cancer in March. The two met in 1986 when Nigella was working as deputy editor of The Sunday Times, and were married in Venice three years later.

It was John who encouraged the fledgling cookery star to explore her potential, suggesting she write a book on the subject and gradually supervising the emergence of a new, more glamorous image.

The result was nothing if not effective. So much so, that US critics have described her Channel 4 series Nigella Bites as “gastro porn”, a pigeonholing guaranteed to boost the show’s ratings.

Nigella, who recently taped a special Christmas edition of her programme to be screened in both the UK and the US is looking forward to the holiday season. She aims to keep her cool during the festivities, however. “To have a good time, but not lose your sanity” is the goal, she says, adding: “It’s not always easy.”
