Superstar Tom Cruise and Spanish stunner Penelope Cruz have travelled the globe in recent weeks to promote their thriller Vanilla Sky. And despite a lukewarm reception from critics regarding their on-screen chemistry, off screen, HELLO! readers have embraced the new pair. The results of the first part of our End Of The Year Poll are in, and Tom and Pen are far and away the Most Attractive New Couple.

While the Cruise/Cruz combo won easily, securing nearly 40 per cent of the vote, thousands were divided over Prince Harry’s Sporting Moment Of The Year. His brave romp at Eton’s Wall Ball game was among the favourites, but it was the 17-year-old royal’s polo defeat of father Prince Charles that garnered the most attention.

It’s been quite a year for Charles, as the heir to the throne continued his charity work with visits to Centrepoint and even met pop princesses Atomic Kitten at the famed Party In The Park. But the most captivating moment proved to be a fatherly right of passage – dropping off his son at university. Seventy per cent of voters chose Charles’s trip to St Andrews as his Most Appealing Moment.

The year 2001 will be remembered for fairy-tale royal weddings, exciting births and wild adventures. Japanese Princess Masako welcomed a baby girl on December 1, and Prince William spent part of his gap year on safari in Africa. But the Best Royal Moment was Crown Prince Haakon of Norway’s trip down the aisle with single mother Mette-Marit Tjessem Hoiby. Thirty-four per cent of our readers felt the August wedding that captured the world’s attention was the royal event of this year.

Robbie Williams scored another three gongs at the Brit Awards this year, making him the biggest winner in the ceremony’s history. However, it seems his High Point For 2001 in the eyes of nearly 50 per cent of HELLO! respondents was a Frank Sinatra tribute at the Royal Albert Hall. It will be a merry Christmas indeed for the Rock DJ singer, as his perfectly Frank disc, Swing When You’re Winning, lands atop the Christmas charts. He’s also scored the number one single with Somethin’ Stupid, featuring Nicole Kidman, making him the first artist to score both yuletide honours since the Spice Girls in 1996.

Madonna’s GHV2 easily pipped Steps and company to the post for Greatest Hits Album Of The Year, earning 44 per cent of votes. The Bee Gees rated 29 per cent, while the Backstreet Boys pulled 15 per cent.

While Baywatch babe Traci Bingham titillated at the Grammy Awards with a pair of pasties and little else, it was Toni Braxton’s Richard Tyler “gown” that earned the top spot. Upwards of 50 per cent named Toni’s appearance Most Revealing, with Caprice’s Brit Awards bikini taking 27 per cent.

Bridget Jones’s Diary was named Best Movie, scoring 42 per cent of the votes – nearly double that of runner-up Moulin Rouge. Despite his wizard charms, Harry Potter found himself in third place with 21 per cent.
