Chancellor Gordon Brown’s baby daughter was christened in hospital over the weekend after being transferred to a neo-natal unit on Friday. Ten-day-old Jennifer Jane, who was delivered seven weeks early to Gordon and his wife Sarah, is currently undergoing treatment for a brain haemorrhage.
Baby Jennifer was baptised by a Church of Scotland minister during a short private service at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. The infant was accompanied by her parents, who have been at her bedside throughout the weekend.
The newborn was transferred from Forth Park Maternity Hospital to the neo-natal unit at the Royal Infirmary after ultrasound tests revealed the brain haemorrhage on Friday. “Sadly, Jennifer’s condition… has deteriorated over the last 24 hours,” said a family spokesperson on Sunday. “Gordon and Sarah are with her and are grateful for the support and good wishes they are receiving at this time.”
The chancellor’s wife Sarah was released from hospital last Thursday, less than a week after giving birth. However, the new parents left without their tiny daughter, who remained confined to an incubator. As they left, Gordon told the waiting press the 2lb 4oz baby, born on December 28, was “as beautiful as the first time I saw her”.
“We know she is in great hands,” he added, thanking the midwives, doctors and nurses at the hospital. “We are eternally grateful for everything they have done for Jennifer and Sarah.”
