After a pair of well-received appearances on Ally McBeal Dame Edna Everage has been asked to extend her stay as a recurring guest.

Dame Edna made her debut in two episodes of the hit comedy’s fifth series as Claire Otoms, a mauve-haired eccentric whose flimsy case was thrown out of court. The colourful icon, who is an incarnation of Australian comedian Barry Humphries, will not appear in every episode, but will have a regular storyline spanning a number of shows.

The bespectacled star is one of many recent additions to the Boston-set programme, which of late seems to have a rapidly rotating roster. Rock musician turned actor Jon Bon Jovi recently joined the cast, replacing Robert Downey Jr as Ally’s new love interest, and other recent guests on the show have included Elton John, Jacqueline Bisset and Mariah Carey.

Episodes starring Dame Edna will be broadcast in the UK in March.
