Being removed from the best newcomer shortlist at the Brits didn’t stop pop chanteuse Dido from winning the new act prize at the NRJ French radio awards in Cannes on Saturday. The chart-topping singer took home three gongs, but missed out on the top female award – that honour went to sexy songstress Jennifer Lopez.

Dido won best newcomer at the Palais de Festival bash, and also managed to score the best album award, defeating Grammy favourites U2. Bronx-born J Lo also fought off tough competition, beating out fellow divas Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Geri Halliwell and Mariah Carey to score her best female artist prize. Michael Jackson proved he is still Invincible, winning for best male star, though he wasn’t at the ceremony to pick up his award.

Though she missed out on best female artist, Geri Halliwell won best song of the year for It’s Raining Men, and went on to wow the audience with a sexy live rendition of the club classic. And Geri wasn’t the only pop goddess to thrill at France’s answer to the Grammys – Britney Spears was the first act of the night, entertaining with a raunchy performance of I’m A Slave 4 U.

Music legend Mick Jagger added his own brand of sass to the night’s line-up, strutting his stuff as he performed his latest single, Visions Of Paradise.

French singer Garou won three awards at the ceremony, including best French duet of the year with Celine Dion and best French male artist.
