The last two hopefuls in the British talent search programme Pop Idol are travelling around the country trying to win over fans in hopes of coming out on top in the programme’s Saturday night vote to decide the winner. However, health problems forced odds-on favourite Gareth to temporarily drop out of the whirlwind drive on Wednesday as his rival Will carried on with promotions.
On Monday the pair launched a week-long general election-style campaign, hitting the trail in so-called “Battle Buses”. Armed with personal manifestos – Will’s says he vows “not to become a music industry diva” – the finalists are making their way around Britain meeting thousands of fans of the top-rated show.
In the midst of the campaign, however, Gareth was forced to cancel appearances after a severe migraine left him so ill he couldn’t get out of bed. Though a doctor recommended the 17-year-old singer should rest, a representative for the aspiring pop star insists he will be performing at the final on Saturday, when the winner of the contest will be decided by viewer votes. Should Gareth be unable to make it to the show, the Pop Idol crown will go to Will by default.
With just days to go before the last show of the series, Pop Idol and its stars are proving more popular than ever. Votes for Saturday night’s show are expected to top the five million counted last week when Darius Danesh dropped out of the competition, and a national tour featuring the ten contestants who reached the finals is planned to kick off in March. Tickets for the Wembley Arena shows on March 14 and 15 sold out within hours, leading organisers to add two extra performances.
