With the debut of her first film Crossroads this week, Britney Spears joins the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey on the growing list of pop divas-turned-actresses. Greeting paparazzi flashes with a grin at the flick’s New York premiere, the 20-year-old singer looked every bit the Hollywood star as she strolled up the red carpet on the arm of her boyfriend, ‘N Sync’s Justin Timberlake.

Britney stars in the road trip movie as a teenager who travels to LA with her boyfriend and two best friends in search of her mother, played by Sex In The City’s Kim Cattrall. And though she’s the first pop singer to try her hand at films since Mariah’s less than successful debut in Glitter, Britney recently told the Toronto Sun she’s confident her move to the big screen will be a smooth one. “It wasn’t easy for me,” she added. “The whole transition was a little scary at first, but I’m so happy I did it.”

The self-described "ambitious" pop star is also “very, very happy” with her first foray into film, the culmination of a life-long dream. “I've always wanted to act,” she says. “Music will always be my heart and soul, but I think there’s a part of me that likes to act.”

Though she’s personally content with Crossroads, Britney says not worried about the film fading at the box office. Says the Overprotected singer: “It’s not even so much about it being the biggest movie in the world, as long as my fans can go to it and be touched by it in its own way.”

Crossroads opens across the US on February 15 and will hit UK screens March 29.
