David and Victoria Beckham commandeered a Manchester cinema on Monday to celebrate son Brooklyn’s third birthday, with a host of football stars and their children turning up to join in the fun. But things could have turned out differently – only the night before, Victoria and Brooklyn had been involved in a six-car pile-up.

The crash happened at about 10pm Sunday night, as the pregnant pop star's dad Tony Adams was driving her and her son north from the Adam's family home in Hertfordshire, in time to attend the party the following day. Two people were taken to hospital with minor injuries, but Victoria, Tony and Brooklyn escaped unscathed and were on fine form for the celebrations.

Held at a reported cost of £3,000, Brooklyn’s birthday bash included a huge cake in Manchester United’s red and white colours, clowns, face paint and special showing of the movie Monsters Inc. “Brooklyn had the time of his life – with piles of presents from his mum and dad’s friends and family,” said an usher at the Manchester Filmworks cinema.

A large number of well-wishers crowded outside the cinema, whooping and cheering, as Argentinian midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron arrived with his family alongside Gary and Phil Neville and Paul Scholes, all with their toddlers in tow. Norwegian soccer star Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also spotted carrying his 18-month-old son Noah into the party.

And whilst the guests enjoyed the show there were further motoring nightmares for some of David’s team-mates – Mikael Silvestre and Laurent Blanc emerged from the film just in time to see their illegally parked cars towed away.
