OUR READERS GIVE TOM JONES THE THUMBS UP

The Queen’s Golden Jubilee concert this June will be bringing together classic acts and newcomers, from Aretha Franklin to Pop Idol’s Will Young. But it’s clear from the latest hellomagazine.com poll that our readers can’t wait for Tom Jones to take the stage, with the 60-year-old Welsh heart-throb scampering off with over half of the 19,000 votes counted.

Taking the top spot in the “Favourite Golden Jubilee Act” poll, the Sex Bomb sex bomb showed he’s still got what it takes – and with his recent string of chart hits, Tom’s also proved that his fan base also spans generations. “It’s not Tom Jones, the guy with the tight pants anymore,” he says. “The kids are saying, ‘Oh, you can sing. I mean, you can sing.’ So they’re listening.”

Deluges of knickers thrown onstage at concerts featuring Pop Idol runners-up Gareth Gates and Darius Danesh have led to comparisons with Mr Jones, but according to our numbers, it is the talent search programme’s winner Will Young who’s his toughest competition. Pop star Will – nearly 40 years Tom’s junior and the most recent act on the Golden Jubilee bill to find fame – came in second, though his 17 per cent share of the vote indicates he may have a way to go.

The poll also shows our readers are keen to see veteran rockers in the lineup, with two other golden oldies – Sirs Paul McCartney and Elton John – rounding out the top four, ranking third and fourth respectively. Respect diva Aretha Franklin and pop group S Club 7 were neck and neck with under two per cent, while Queen, Phil Collins and Brian Wilson were just blips on the radar, not even making it to one per cent.
