David Beckham’s dreams of leading England to victory in the World Cup look to be over. A reckless tackle by a Deportivo La Coruña player during Manchester United’s Championship League quarter-final has put the football ace in hospital with a broken bone in his foot.
He will definitely be out of the game for six to eight weeks. Becks suffered the injury when Argentine defender Aldo Duscher sent him flying with a two-footed lunge in the 16th minute.
With the World Cup game against Sweden just seven weeks away – it takes place on June 2 – United boss Alex Ferguson and England chief Sven Goran Eriksson must now be praying that the soccer star makes a quick recovery.
Beckham was helped off the field, but his ankle instantly gave way as he tried to put weight on it. In tears and his face a mask of agony, the Man U star was carried down the tunnel on a stretcher. He was immediately taken to a local hospital for X-rays, accompanied by his wife Victoria and baby son Brooklyn.
Becks had only just recovered from an injury to the same leg which he suffered in the team’s away match, when he was tackled by La Coruña player Diego Tristan.
Duscher was eventually sent off after being shown the yellow card twice. He was followed by Lionel Scaloni in the second half, leaving the Spanish side two men down.
Beckham’s replacement, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, went on to score twice while helping Manchester United to a 3-2 victory over the Spanish side ensuring the team’s passage into the Champion’s League semi final. England last won the World Cup in 1966.
