Pop Idol hosts Ant and Dec have gone back to their home town of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, to make a tribute to the classic British sitcom, The Likely Lads.

The duo, who made their name on the children's show Byker Grove when they were teenagers and have since gone on to launch successful music and TV careers, will star in a half-hour remake of a 1973 episode of the show, which is to be shown on ITV1 next month.

Ant McPartlin will star as layabout and jack-the-lad Terry Collier – a role made famous by James Bolam – while Declan Donnelly will play hard-working pal Bob Ferris – originally played by Rodney Bewes, who has a cameo in the remake.

Dec told British tabloid The Daily Express that he and Ant, both 26, had been lifelong fans of the show. “I have so much respect for the originals and of course they are two lads from Newcastle and so are we.”

The Likely Lads and the sequel Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads? ran on BBC1 from 1964 to 1973. It is not the only sitcom Ant and Dec are involved in. They are are also reportedly considering a remake of the Oscar-winning movie The Odd Couple, which originally starred Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
