With 17 platinum albums, 22 gold records and 32 music videos under their collective belt, Aerosmith certainly has a place in rock music history. And MTV has now officially dubbed the Steven Tyler-led group a musical icon, honouring them with a star-studded LA concert featuring artists such as Shakira, Pink and Kid Rock, who performed some of the outfit’s hottest tunes.
An eclectic mix of stars were on hand to celebrate the band’s three decades of music on Sunday night, with everyone from Cher to rap artist Nas taking the stage. “Even after all this time together, Aerosmith still rock,” said Shakira, who put her own spin on Dude Looks Like A Lady.
Lord Of The Rings actress Liv Tyler, who got her start starring in her dad’s videos, was on hand, along with Janet Jackson, Alicia Silverstone, Limp Bizkit front man Fred Durst, and Pamela Anderson with her fiancé Kid Rock. Jennifer Aniston, who once said Steven Tyler was the only man husband Brad Pitt would let her sleep with, drew her share of attention in a skin-baring outfit.
Late in the show, Liv introduced the guests of honour – father Steve, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Joey Kramer and Tom Hamilton – who played a rocking finale, finishing off the night with a standing ovation.
Though fans were thrilled with the tribute, it seems no one is more appreciative than Aerosmith themselves. “We’ve had people cover our stuff for years,” said Steven. “That’s an honour in itself. But then when you hear Kid Rock or Run-DMC or somebody else perform your songs, it brings it to a whole new level.”
