Comedian Paul O’Grady, better known as Lily Savage, is “feeling a bit lousy” but “recovering normally” after suffering a heart attack last week, according to his agent, Brendan Murphy. The 46-year-old performer, currently recuperating at a London hospital after undergoing an operation on Friday, is said to be improving; however, more surgery may be on the cards.
“The operation was a success as far as it goes,” revealed Brendan, “but we’re not sure whether it’s the first and final or the first of several.” Paul is under observation for damage to his heart, and will need to remain in hospital for at least five days “if all goes well”. Doctors are apparently waiting to see how he responds to the procedure, said to have been an angioplasty – where a tiny balloon is inserted into a blocked artery to widen it – before deciding on any next steps.
The entertainer, who had no history of heart problems, fell ill at his central London home around 3am on Friday and immediately called his agent. “I went straight round there and he was in a lot of pain, although he didn’t look too bad,” says Brendan. “I called an ambulance and the rest happened very quickly and efficiently.
“It was a shock because he had not complained of any heart trouble before and he had no prior warning at all.”
