Members of the boy band ’N Sync paid tribute to Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, the member of the award-winning American R&B trio TLC who died in a car crash in Honduras last week, as an energetic performer who was always eager to work. Speaking on Sunday, Justin Timberlake described Lisa as humble, fun, warm and loving. “She had a passion for what she did,” Justin said. “She loved to work and she loved to make music.”
Lisa’s body is due to be transported to the United States for burial after the local authorities have carried out an autopsy, the US Embassy said on Sunday. “The autopsy needs to be completed, so it will be Tuesday or Wednesday when the remains of Lisa Lopes leave for the United States,” embassy spokesman Gregory Adams told Reuters. The singer’s body is expected to be sent to her hometown, Atlanta, Georgia, for burial although the funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
Lisa, who would have turned 31 next month, passed away in a Honduran hospital after suffering fractures and internal injuries when the vehicle she was driving in with eight other passengers flipped off the road in the north of the central American country, the local police announced. The remaining passengers, all US citizens, were injured in the crash, some seriously, and remain hospitalised. Investigators believe the car wreck was caused by speeding.
A local newspaper, La Tribuna, said the accident occurred when Lopes was returning from a health centre that treats chronic illness with natural methods.
TLC first burst on to the pop scene ten years ago with the album Oooooooh… On The TLC Tip. Their 1994 follow-up Crazysexycool brought them mainstream success on the back of hit tracks such as Waterfalls. TLC’s most recent album, 1999’s FanMail, sold eight million copies, topped the US chart for five weeks, and won the Grammy for best R&B album the following year.
TLC had been working on a new album in an Atlanta studio for release later this year at the time of Lisa’s death.
