David Beckham gives a revealing look at his sensitive side and sets the record straight on his fashionista reputation in an exclusive chat with Elton John’s partner and Beckham family friend David Furnish in the June issue of GQ magazine. The England captain also shares the inside story on his romance with his famous wife, saying: “When I looked at Victoria for the first time, I felt real love.”
Though they met after a football match, Posh had initially caught David’s attention in a sexy Spice Girls clip. “When I saw the video of her wearing a catsuit in the desert, I was just ‘Phwoarh’,” he says. “I never ever thought I’d be able to meet her.”
Not surprisingly, when the Spice Girl and the football icon finally did come together – “fate” as David calls it – the sparks flew. “We just clicked,” he says. “I just couldn’t take my eyes off her.”
The romantic tale gives an insight on the Manchester United star, who, though he’s tough on the pitch, is a real teddy bear behind closed doors. “I am an affectionate person,” he explains. “I get upset easily. I watch a film and I’ll cry… Honestly, I cried at Armageddon.”
Being one of today’s hottest properties comes with its share of misconceptions – so what’s the real story on his trend-setting fashion sense and closets full of designer clothes? “A lot of people think: ‘Oh, he’s this flash Cockney so-and-so’,” admits the star. “Well, I’m not… I just like looking nice.”
David is now getting a chance to expand his already multi-faceted image, as he’s considering a role in a BBC One sitcom alongside fellow football star Michael Owen. A BBC rep says Trevor’s World Of Sport will “take a comic look at that world where sports stars are massive iconic heroes” along the lines of the Tom Cruise smash Jerry Maguire.
