Some 2,000 fans queued from 6am to catch a glimpse of their Hero Enrique Iglesias as he took part in his first ever record signing session in the UK. The singer, who is in London for a trio of sold-out shows at the Royal Albert Hall, was mobbed by fans as he made an appearance at an Oxford Circus record store.
Enrique, son of Spanish crooner Julio, is in Britain to promote his new single Escape and has just been announced as one of the headliners for this summer’s Party In The Park. The singer, who last week was forced to cancel a gig in Glasgow due to throat trouble, is currently on a European tour and after his London dates will head off to Ireland.
Despite Enrique’s grungy appearance at the signing – he donned a colourful woolly hat, khaki T-shirt and worn-out jeans – his mainly teenage female fans were thrilled to see him and heralded his arrival with a chorus of his Number One hit Hero.
The Spanish heart-throb was surprised at just how much fans have taken to him in the UK.
“They’re really great, it’s amazing the way fans have reacted. It has really surprised me how positive and huge it has become,” he said.
Fan Theresa Galea was among those who braved the British weather for eight hours to see Enrique – and was rewarded with a kiss.
“It was lovely, but he was a bit stubbly,” she said. “I had to ask him twice. I think he was a bit reluctant because of the queues.”
