Hollywood glitterati rubbed shoulders with the sporting world’s elite at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco on Tuesday. Regarded by some as sport's Oscars, the star-studded event attracted a host of big names, including film stars Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sir Sean Connery, Morgan Freeman, supermodel Heidi Klum and tennis ace Boris Becker.
The event’s patron, Prince Albert of Monaco, was also in attendance despite news that his father, Prince Rainier has been hospitalised following a bout of bronchitis.
Top honours went to Michael Schumacher and Jennifer Capriati who were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year. Michael, who won the Austrian Grand Prix at the weekend amid some controversy, was presented with his award by Welsh beauty Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Jennifer Capriati, the French and Australian Open tennis champion, beat off stiff competition from U.S. compatriot Venus Williams to win her award.
Perhaps one of the night’s most popular winners was Croatian Goran Ivanisevic, whose amazing victory at Wimbledon in 2001 earned him the title of this year's World Comeback of the Year.
The annual Awards Ceremony, now in its third year, recognizes and celebrates global sporting excellence.
