A SIZZLING LINE-UP OF LATINO STARS AT THE ALMA AWARDS IN L.A.

Latin celebs from Antonio Banderas to Ricky Martin turned out on Saturday night for the annual American Latino Media Awards (Alma) to see the Benjamin Bratt vehicle Piñero scoop three gongs including Best Motion Picture.

Accompanied by his new wife, Talisa Soto, Benjamin nabbed the Best Actor award for his portrayal of the poet-playwright Miguel Piñero. The movie also took home the screenplay nod for Leon Ichaso. Joining Piñero in the winners circle was Roberto Rodriguez, who was named Best Director for Spy Kids, and Laura Elena Harring, who picked up the Best Actress Alma for Mulholland Drive.

Dressed entirely in black, Spanish actor Antonio Banderas garnered a special honour award alongside Moulin Rouge’s John Leguizamo and popstar Ricky Martin. After collecting his gong from Antonio’s wife Melanie Griffith, the Puerto Rican singer entertained the audience with a stunning live performance.

From the music world, Salsa star Marc Anthony carried off three Almas including Best Male Performer and Spanish Language Album of the Year for Libre. Pop singer Shakira scooped Best Album of the Year for Laundry Service and Best Female Performer.Held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, the Alma Awards recognise individuals or works that present positive images of Latinos.
