Cold Feet star John Thompson and his girlfriend Sam Sharp have revealed they are expecting their first child.
In an echo of a storyline from the hit TV series in which he appears, the actor and his fiancée were told the good news just days after booking a course of fertility treatment. In the programme, Pete’s close friend Adam and his wife Rachel believe they are unable to have children and are considering adoption when they learn Rachel is pregnant.
John and his bride-to-be plan to tie the knot in May 2003 and had arranged to have the IVF treatment shortly after the wedding. “It’s been a total bolt from the blue,” says the actor, who made his name in The Fast Show.
“We thought we couldn’t have children, so we were preparing for the fertility course when suddenly it happened. Now I can’t wait, in fact, I’d like to have three, although Sam might want to stop at two.”
“We don’t know whether it’s going to be a boy or girl,” adds John. “And I think we’ll keep it as another surprise.”
The good news crowns a new happier phase in the couple’s relationship, with John recently saying of Sam: “She’s a lot like me – mad, outgoing, lives life to the full. I’m very happy at the moment and Sam has a lot to do with that.”
The pair have had their difficulties, however, especially after John admitted to cheating on Sam with two fans while filming for Cold Feet in Australia. Their relationship ran into problems, and the actor ended up in hospital with a wound to his arm after the couple had a major row last New Year’s Eve.
“I felt the only way to retain any dignity was to end the relationship,” says Sam. “I don’t know what made me change my mind. I suppose I realised that I really did love him and that things could have been worse.”
