Ten-year-old Yuka Hirota was surely the envy of thousands of girls around the world on Tuesday, receiving a tender kiss on the cheek from hunky England star David Beckham. And a fond memory of the smooch wasn’t all little Yuka took home with her that day – David, along with team mates David James and Rio Ferdinand, also presented the lucky youngster with an autographed England shirt.
Becks and the squad were mobbed by 300 screaming pupils on the visit to the Ishya Elementary School near the team’s training base in Awaji, Japan. Some of the students, aged 5 to 11, even burst into tears – and later had a chance to ask the England captain some candid kid questions.
“What do you do if you want to go to the toilet during a game?” asked a student. With a laugh, Becks replied: “You don’t, you just have to hang on.” One bold nine-year-old girl, wise beyond her years, issued a two part question: “Do you have a girlfriend and if not, can I be your girlfriend?” “No,” came Beckham’s response. “I’m afraid I’m already married.”
Even the best of husbands, however, sometimes ignore the advice of their spouses, as David apparently did when he made the game-winning World Cup penalty shot in last week’s England-Argentina match. “Victoria said to me before we flew out to Japan: ‘Whatever you do, don’t take any penalties,” revealed Becks. Of course, David did successfully make the kick, bringing the team even closer to taking home the coveted title.
