Pop star Britney Spears has pipped a host of stars – including Steven Spielberg, Madonna and U2 – to be named the most powerful celebrity in the world in Forbes magazine’s top 100 celebrity list.
The singer shot up from fourth place to scoop the top spot in the table which rates stars on earnings, website page views, and media coverage. Last year, Britney earned around £30 million, attracted over ten cover stories and appeared on TV and radio nearly 400 times.
Golfer Tiger Woods came in second, with director Steven Spielberg and pop icons Madonna and U2 following up behind. Last year’s number one, Tom Cruise, vanished from the table following his divorce from Nicole Kidman and a series of movie flops. Ironically, Moulin Rouge star Nicole came in 27th after earning £10 million last year.
Only five Britons made the list, with notable omissions in Kate Winslet and Paul McCartney. Elton John led the Brits in 25th place while Harry Potter creator J K Rowling came in at 35. Also included were boxing World Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis at 38 and guitarist Eric Clapton on 52 while Birmingham born rocker Ozzy Osborne rounded off the British contingent at 85.
