Newly returned honeymooners Paul and Heather McCartney joined the Duchess of York and a host of celebrities for the presentation of ITV1’s Britain’s Brilliant Prodigies awards on Thursday.
The evening was organised in conjunction with the Duchess’ charity Children In Crisis which works with underprivileged children around the world.
Fergie, looking svelte and elegant in a black chiffon top and black trousers, presented the final award to 14-year-old violinist Nicola Benedetti from Scotland. Also handing out trophies were EastEnders actor Martin Kemp, Olympic rower James Cracknell and Davina McCall who presented the Best Young Ballet Dancer, Best Young Actor and Best Gymnast awards.
Paul and Heather, obviously determined that the evening should focus on the children being honoured rather than themselves, refused to talk about either their honeymoon or future plans to start a family. “I think we can nix that question and try and get on with what we are here for, which is Sarah’s charity and the charity work done,” said the former Beatle when asked whether there were any kids on the horizon for the couple. “It is fantastic, they are all very talented kids and we are very proud to be here and honoured to be in their presence.”
After the ceremonies were over the Duchess admitted she was cross with herself for not having asked the stars for their autographs for her children, Beatrice and Eugenie. “I can’t believe that Paul and Heather came and Davina presented,” she said. “I was so grateful. It was an extraordinary evening for me. I was very emotional.”
At one point Fergie, who regularly appears on US TV where she is a media celebrity, was asked whether she would like her children to go into showbiz. “Whatever they choose to do I will support them she replied.
