It’s the season for celebrity pregnancies, with a clutch of lovely ladies flaunting their bumps at public events and looking good on it.
This week, there was Sex In The City star Sarah Jessica Parker displaying her great expectations at the New York premiere of the series' fifth run in a sweet little white satin dress and the kind of spikes most women would only slip into to be carried from the car to the cocktail bar, not when seven months’ pregnant.
Sarah, married to fellow actor Matthew Broderick, says it was “completely thrilling” when she found out she was pregnant, even though they hadn’t really been planning on it, and she is concerned about how it may affect her career. Herself one of eight children, she wants to have as many kids as is healthy, she says.
British actress Sadie Frost, currently expecting her third child with actor husband Jude Law (and her fourth), was also doing well in the glam stakes when she arrived at the premiere for the talent-stuffed movie Road To Perdition in a black strapless gown by Matthew Williamson.
This time round, Sadie isn’t interested in knowing the baby’s sex. "I thought for this one I just wouldn't find out,” she says. “I've got two boys and a girl, so it doesn't really matter what this one is."
Sadie was one of three celebrity mums-to-be who gathered at the house of designer Stella McCartney last month for a baby shower, a tradition which is beginning to gain more popularity in Britain. The other two were model Kate Moss, 28, expecting her first child in October, and millionaire Texas lead singer Sharleen Spiteri, 37, who has been hoping for a baby for years.
Then there’s Victoria ‘Posh Spice’ Beckham, who didn’t make it to the World Cup to see husband David captain the England team because she’s due to give birth to their second child in September.
Car collector David recently ordered that his brand new Bentley have his son’s name, Brooklyn, stitched into one of the back seats, with the other left free for the family’s new arrival to be added on later.
