Admirers of seven-time Wimbledon winner Steffi Graf will be pleased to hear that the legendary tennis champion is not resting on her laurels in retirement, but has branched out into design and launched a collection of travel gear and handbags bearing her name.
Steffi, who’d reached the top and had to stop in tennis, says: “The idea of designing my own collection came through the constant travel in my life. I’ve carried many different bags, but most couldn’t bring together all the things I expected.”
Not a fan of the limelight despite her many years dominating the women’s tennis scene, Steffi did make an appearance at the launch of the new Stefanie Graf Collection – called Basic, Modern and Travel – at a trade fair in her native Germany. However, she didn’t speak, choosing instead to issue a press release.
The new line, manufactured by Goldpfeil, will be available in shops in the autumn, with prices ranging from around 50 euros (£32) for a travelling manicure set to 550 euros (£350) for a large handbag.
The head of Goldpfeil, Hans-Joerg Seeberger, said that Steffi was very much a hands-on celebrity designer. "She helped create it down to the tiniest details, with the same desire for perfection she showed in playing tennis."
Steffi, 33, is now based in Las Vegas with husband and fellow tennis champion Andre Agassi, and their baby son Jaden Gil.
