Newlywed Liza Minnelli is about to become a new mum aged 56. The Cabaret star and her husband, producer David Gest, have told a US newspaper they are adopting a three-year-old child who will be joining their family in January.
The little girl, whose name will be Serena, is American, according the show biz couple, who married last March. “Adoptions often take years but ours was only a four-month process. The situation was somebody who couldn’t provide for her,” Liza told the New York Post.
The couple likely began planning the new addition soon after their star-studded New York wedding, which featured Elizabeth Taylor as bridesmaid and Michael Jackson as best man. Just three days after the nuptials, Liza told US interviewer Larry King: “We are looking into (adoption) right now… When one has been through a lot and learned something along the way, hopefully the least you can do is to pass it on to an innocent child who need parents because they have lost theirs.”
David, 48, was also enthusiastic about the prospect of adding a little one to the family. “I’m for it,” he said at the time. “I’ve always wanted to have children and I have no doubt Liza will make a great mother.”
