The battle was hardly of epic proportions, nor did it feature strange creatures from another galaxy, but TV time lord Dr Who celebrated victory this week over the forces of the law.
After a six-year struggle, the BBC, which produces the cult series, has secured the copyright for the Doctor’s unusual time-travel vehicle, the tardis. For 26 years the blue, former police box – which last served its original purpose in the Sixties – transported the space-hopping Doctor from one adventure to the next.
Now, a decision by lawyers at the patent office that the blue box is more closely associated with the TV series than the Metropolitan police, means the Beeb will benefit from all merchandising associated with it.
The Met had contested the BBC's original application, but is resigned to the final decision. "We are disappointed but philosophical," said a police spokesman.
Registry applications have now been made for other items associated with the Metropolitan Police Force, such as the traditional blue station lamp, the name New Scotland Yard and the officers identity badge.
