He's due to be a dad any day now, but Cold Feet star John Thomson has decided to call it quits with his pregnant fiancée.
The star, who plays Pete Gifford in the popular ITV1 series, says that he's leaving the volatile relationship with 29-year-old Sam Sharp for the sake of his soon-to-be-born child.
"Mr Thomson believes that is in the best interests of all concerned that this separation takes place before the birth so that the baby can arrive into a calm environment, with no animosity between its parents," said an attorney for the actor.
Citing "irreconcilable differences" for the relationship's demise, the lawyer added that John will "support and be fully involved with his baby and its upbringing".
The break-up may not be a surprise to some – in October, friends said a planned spring wedding looked increasingly doubtful after the actor reportedly flew into a drunken rage at the couple's Manchester home, leading his eight months' pregnant fiancée to phone the police. In an interview just weeks ago, John admitted: "Sam and I have a very passionate relationship. That's what I love about her. What comes with that package, though, are rows."
