Just days after an attempt to kidnap her was uncovered and foiled, ex-Spice Girl Victoria Beckham is back in the headlines on two fronts, with news of a possible legal battle over the right to use the word "Posh" and stories of a $1.5 million record deal.
The wife of the England football captain is trying to prevent small, second division English football club Peterborough United - whose nickname has been "The Posh" for over 80 years - registering "Posh" and "The Posh" as trademarks. She asserts she should hold worldwide rights to the name due to her Posh Spice moniker. “The name Posh is inexorably associated with Victoria Beckham in the public’s mind,” her publicity company said in a statement yesterday.
Declaring himself to be “absolutely stunned” by the turn of events, Peterborough United’s chief executive Geoff Davey warned that any decision to prevent the club using Posh in merchandising would be a hammer blow to its finances. He also indicated that legal procedures might be an option. A final decision as to who owns the name looks set to be delayed until next year.
It’s not all trouble and strife for Victoria, however, as stories emerge of a one-and-a-half-million pound record deal with Telstar, which also boasts David Craig as one of its artists. Sources say the glamorous mother-of-two has already booked studio time and will begin work on a new album in the next few weeks.
