Bankrupt Planet Hollywood has teamed up with famed auction house Sotheby's to give fans a chance to own a piece of the silver screen. The restaurant chain, whose original investors included stars such as Demi Moore, Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone, is putting hundreds of the Tinseltown costumes and props displayed in its eateries under the hammer.
Buyers will have a chance to bid on frocks worn by stars ranging from Greta Garbo to Marilyn Monroe. For example, Vivien Leigh's negligee from the 1951 classic A Streetcar Named Desire is expected fetch between $8,000 and $10,000. The dress worn by Julie Andrews in The Sound Of Music, which is also up for grabs, is valued at over $20,000.
The 300 items for sale, however, represent just a fraction of the chain's 40,000 item collection, much of which is in storage after the closure of a number of locations. Planet Hollywood, which still continues around the world with about half the number of restaurants it boasted at its 50-branch peak, filed for bankruptcy in 1999.
Saturday's live auction will be held in conjunction with an online sale of TV memorabilia which runs through Monday.
