Rocker Bruce Springsteen and newcomer Norah Jones found themselves among the top nominees for this year's Grammys when some of the biggest names in music revealed the short lists for more than 100 categories on Tuesday. Six other acts, including Eminem and Sheryl Crow, tied with American icon and the hot new vocalist with five nominations each.

Stars including Justin Timberlake, rapper Nelly and five-time nominees Avril Lavigne and Ashanti, announced the nominations from New York's Madison Square Garden.

Though Avril and Ashanti are undeniably hot properties, the only artist to appear in the top three categories – record, album and song of the year – was another female who took 2002 by storm, Norah Jones, the daughter of Indian musician Ravi Shankar. Norah also competes in the best female pop vocal performance category, against pop divas Pink and Britney Spears.

However, not all the nominees are straight off the new artist track – Bruce Springsteen takes on the likes of Nelly, Norah, Eminem and the Dixie Chicks for best album, and his The Rising challenges the catchy Vanessa Carlton tune A Thousand Miles among others for the year's hottest song.

Other established artists nominated this year include Sting, James Taylor, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Bon Jovi and Santana. The best male rock performance category is wall-to-wall veterans, with David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant and the ubiquitous Bruce Springsteen battling for the title.

The Grammys will be presented on February 23 in New York.
