Model-turned-actress Jerry Hall and designer Stella McCartney were among an eclectic gathering of celebrities who stepped out in style for London's South Bank Show awards. One of the big winners at the event, which honours achievements in the arts over the past year, was Ms Dynamite, who pipped veteran David Bowie and chart-toppers Coldplay to scoop the best pop act gong.
Also among the success stories of Monday night were American Beauty director and Kate Winslet's beau Sam Mendes, who picked up an accolade for his productions of Uncle Vanya and Twelfth Night at London's Donmar Warehouse. Fellow director Stephen Frears was awarded the best cinema trophy for Dirty Pretty Things, while writer Sir Tom Stoppard took home a prize for outstanding contribution to the arts.
Other honours included the visual arts award, given to sculptor Anish Kapoor, and the literature prize, which went to Tipping The Velvet author Sarah waters for her latest work, Fingersmith.Sunday Bloody Sunday, starring James Nesbitt, was named best TV drama, and best comedy was won by BBC2's The League Of Gentlemen.
The event, which also featured appearances by actor Dougray Scott and Bond girl Rosamund Pike, will be screened on ITV1 on January 26.
