With Valentine's Day just around the corner, romance is on the minds of many – and celebrities, of course, are no different. This year, some high-profile stars, including supermodel Gisele, actress Penelope Cruz and entertainment legend Barbra Streisand, are getting into the spirit by designing heart-shaped platinum pendants for the Women With Heart charity auction.

Tom Cruise's squeeze Penelope surely got in touch with her romantic side to create her upside-down platinum heart adorned with three diamonds, while Susan Sarandon's inspired piece is engraved with the phrase: "One must live, not just exist." Gisele and Ms Streisand took decidedly different approaches to their designs – the catwalk star came up with a modern 51-diamond pendant, and the Star Is Born actress created a pink diamond-sprinked heart with "old world charm".

On-line bidding for the pendants takes place on sothebys.com until February 10, with previews of the jewellery held at the auction house's New York branch until February 5, and its LA branch on February 7. Charities benefitting from the fundraiser, which is sponsored by Platinum Guild International, include the Alzheimer's Association, and St Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Last year's inaugural event raised nearly $130,000 for causes selected by participating stars, including Friends of the Breast Cancer Program at UCLA – chosen by Renee Zellweger and Courtney Cox-Arquette – and Cameron Diaz's preferred charity, Adopt-A-Classroom.
