The full story behind the dressing room upset that left David Beckham needing stitches has been revealed.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that he lost his temper and kicked a football boot, sending it flying into the England captain's face. While he didn't intend to hurt his star player, the outburst left David with a nasty gash above his left eye and the club physiotherapist had to dress the wound with two butterfly stitches.
"That happens in a dressing room," said Sir Alex afterwards. "It was a freak of nature, it happens. It's over and it will never happen again." The 61-year-old, who was angry over United's 2-0 loss to Arsenal, has declined to apologise.
David's pop star wife Victoria is said to have been furious when she picked David up after the match. And rumours of a rift between Sir Alex and David have been fuelled after the footballer made no effort to conceal the injury from photographers. The 28-year-old appeared in public on Monday with his hair tied back, removing his sunglasses to reveal the extent of the injury.
He also made life easy for waiting paparazzi when he left his Cheshire home earlier in the day. "Usually David has a hat pulled over his head and pulls the sun visor down on his truck," said one onlooker. "Everyone fully expected that to be the case today, but it was if he didn't mind being snapped."
