Celebrity interviewer Martin Bashir has reportedly pulled out of presenting a gong at the Brit Awards after receiving death threats from angry Michael Jackson fans.
The renowned journalist found himself at the centre of a storm of controversy after his recent interview with the reclusive star. In the programme, Living With Michael Jackson, he revealed that the singer sleeps in the same bed with little boys, wants to live forever and thinks of himself as Peter Pan.
Martin has been deluged with hate mail, including threats to his life, ever since. He had been scheduled to present the best international female award while one of Michael's hit singles was played in the background.
It was also feared some of the show biz guests at the ceremony might have angry words for Martin. Top of the list was Justin Timberlake, who is scheduled to perform the Neneh Cherry track Buffalo Stance with Kylie Minogue.
The former 'NSync star had earlier warned that organisers should not to let him run into the interviewer. "That guy is despicable," said Justin. "He had better keep out of my way. Michael is a really nice guy who looks at the world through the eyes of a child." Michael's sister Janet is also expected to attend the prizegiving, though her feelings about the programme are unknown.
A Brits spokesman has confirmed that Martin will be staying away from the event this Sunday: "Jackson fans are very passionate and he was worried he could have been targeted as he walked up the red carpet. He also felt that he would be vulnerable when he left Earls Court.
"As well as all the fans, it's clear his programme has angered some of the performers at the Brits. He wouldn't want to be bumping into an angry Justin. After careful consideration, he has decided to pull out."
