James Major has confirmed that his marriage to model Emma Noble is over. Having moved back in with his parents John and Norma, James said: "I haven't got a wife and I haven't got a home."

The former prime minister's son is said to be contemplating whether to stay in Cambridgeshire, so as to be close to son Harrison, or to make a fresh start elsewhere. His split from Emma follows revelations that she had an affair with Crossroads star Graham McGrath.

Friends also say that James felt "suffocated" by the presence of her parents, who recently moved to the village where they live. "Things between James and Emma have not been good for some time," said a friend.

"He has made it clear that as far as he is concerned the marriage is over. There have been problems for a while. The news of the affair was just another nail in the coffin rather than the actual reason for things going wrong. He wasn't happy when Emma's parents moved."
