Some very big stars turned out to thrill their littlest fans at the 16th Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards in sunny Santa Monica at the weekend.

Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore were among the A-list Hollywood stars at the irreverent bash, which celebrates the finest in kids' entertainment, while Britney Spears and her former beau Justin Timberlake were on hand – separately – representing the top names in music.

During the fun-filled show, which features such unusual categories as "Favourite Female Butt Kicker" – this year's honour went to The Tuxedo star Jennifer Love Hewitt – actor Jim Carrey was the special recipient of the event's annual "sliming". After getting doused in slippery green liquid on stage he commented: "What does it feel like? It feels like love, man, slimey gooey love."

Justin Timberlake drew attention for his burping skills, but it was comedian Adam Sandler who was the king of the afternoon, taking home trophies for Mr Deeds and his voice work in the animated feature Eight Crazy Nights.

Men In Black's Will Smith was honoured with a special silver Wannabe Award, given to the favourite role model of the year. Picking up his trophy, he advised his young fans to "read, work hard and never let anyone tell you that you can't do something".

Kids are definitely number one at the celebration - children vote for their favourites in all the categories, and the VIP tent features all-you-can-eat ice cream and video games.
