Hollywood stars Minnie Driver and Jeremy Irons were among the more than 1,000 illustrious guests who turned out for the opening of London's Saatchi Gallery, a new venue dedicated to contemporary art.
Model Sophie Anderton and jewellery designer Jade Jagger were also in attendance at the lavish launch, which featured a live art "happening" – 160 nude volunteers lying on the ground, directed by artist Spencer Tunic. "It's good to have an artistic reason for watching this sort of thing," said actor Stephen Fry, who was among the guests.
There certainly was no shortage of star power at the party, which attracted dozens of big names from film, TV, fashion and music. Newlyweds Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani took time out from their respective rock bands to grace the bash, while singer Lisa Stansfield and actress Miranda Richardson also browsed the exhibitions.
Cookery queen Nigella Lawson, elegant in a black gown, had a very good reason to attend – her boyfriend Charles Saatchi owns the gallery.
Among the displays are pieces from Charles's private collection, as well as international works and some creations that have never before been seen in public.
