Football hero Michael Owen became a father for the first time on Thursday, after his partner Louise Bonsall gave birth to a baby girl, Gemma Rose.

Though he's showered with cheers from fans while on the pitch, nothing compares with being a new dad, says the Liverpool striker. "This is the most amazing moment of my life," he said. "I was more nervous than Louise. We are very proud parents and looking forward to spending time as a family."

The athlete's 6lb 8oz bundle of joy arrived at the Countess of Chester Hospital at about 3pm. Describing the arrival of her daughter as the "happiest moment" of her life, 23-year-old Louise said: "I'm very tired, but delighted. Gemma is absolutely gorgeous." The new parents, who met while in primary school in North Wales, have been a couple since they were 14.

Michael's FC Liverpool team-mates warmly congratulated the new parents. "Everyone at the club is thrilled to hear the good news," said the team's spokesman Ian Cotton. "We are all delighted for him and Louise."
