Former Miami Vice star Don Johnson has been cleared of any wrongdoing after German authorities found an $8 billion fortune in his car. The handsome actor was briefly detained by police last November after he drove across the border from Switzerland with a briefcase full of credit notes and other securities.

While police initially said that charges against the 53-year-old were likely, they have now accepted that the documents did not belong to him. "An examination has shown that no offence was committed from a German point of view," said German customs spokesman Leonhard Biel.

"The whole thing is off the burner as far as we're concerned," he added. "We're very sorry that the story was leaked to the media and caused so much mishap for Mr. Johnson."

Though Don had been travelling with two companions, it has been revealed the documents actually belonged to another person who had stayed behind in Switzerland. In view of the sums involved, the papers were photocopied and US authorities informed but no formal investigation was ever launched.

German authorities say they happened upon the billions when Don's car was stopped as part of a routine check. As Switzerland is not part of the EU, vehicles are regularly stopped at the border with Germany.
