The writers of hit soap EastEnders have cooked up a new plot calling on the talents of TV chef and actress Madhur Jaffrey.

Madhur, who has been dubbed the "Queen of Curry", is joining the cast for one month in a special guest spot. She'll be playing the matriarch in the new Ferreira family, which makes its debut on June 3.

However, an insider tells the Daily Mirror that fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Madhur's appearance since she'll turn up later than her clan as part of a surprise plotline. "The family arrive on screen… but Madhur's character isn't with them," said the source. "Not much is said about what has happened to their mother and the assumption is that she has passed away. But all will be revealed when Madhur turns up – rather unexpectedly."

The India-born 66-year-old, who was once married to Coronation Street actor Saeed Jaffrey, appeared alongside Robert DeNiro in the 1999 drama Flawless. Her cookbooks include Indian Cookery, Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian and A Taste Of India.
