PINK FLOYD STAR SELLS £3.6-MILLION MANSION FOR CHARITY

When Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour sold his £3.6-million London mansion to Earl Spencer last year, he didn't bank the profits. Instead, the longtime supporter of homeless charity Crisis decided to give away the money to benefit his favourite cause.

On Tuesday David visited Crisis and again issued his support for the project, a London urban village which aims to get people off the streets and into their own homes. "Instead of putting people in hostels, this scheme supports them living on their own," he said. The charity is still trying to raise millions in donations to get the plan up and running, however.

Now, the musician wants nothing more than for others to follow his generous example. "The money I've given is only a jump-start," he says. "It would be lovely to persuade a few more in my lucky position to do the same thing."

The 57-year-old rocker, who is worth an estimated £75 million, says he and wife Polly sold the Georgian mansion for a simple reason. "It seemed obscene for us to be rattling around in such a large home when others had nowhere to live," he explained to British newspaper The Mirror. The couple spend most of their time at their Sussex farm property and a newly bought "tiny mews house" in London.
