David Beckham's thoughts during his early days with Manchester United – including his dreams of one day owning a Ford Escort and his success with the local girls – have been revealed in letters he wrote to his favourite teacher.
The notes, brought to light by British newspaper The Sun, were sent between 1991 and 1993 to schoolteacher John Bullock as Becks was kicking off his 14-year career with Manchester United.
"I'm pleased to say that I'm doing well," says one letter from the teenage footballer. "Our age should be playing for the B team but I'm playing for the A team because I'm playing so well… (and) I am pulling all the women down here of course. Ha ha."
Two years later, Becks – who went from addressing his preferred teacher as Mr Bullock to eventually opening his letters with "Dear John" – was still making progress in leaps and bounds in his career. "I have been busy sorting out my new contract which I have signed now so I'm really pleased with that," he wrote. "I got four more years as a pro and a £20,000 signing-on fee so that's alright."
The man now known for his pricey collection of vehicles was thrilled to announce he'd been taking driving lessons, adding: "I've been looking at the cars as well and I think I will be getting an Escort after my birthday in May, one of the new shaped ones, so that would be really nice."
Sadly Mr Bullock passed away in 1998, on the night England was eliminated from the World Cup, aged 47. His 78-year-old father Fred, who still has other Beckham momentos that the star player sent of the years, such as a pair of signed boots, revealed the correspondence to the UK newspaper.
