David Beckham and fellow members of the Real Madrid squad showed their selective eating habits by snubbing a £50-a-head feast during their visit to China.
The ten-course spread, held in their honour at a banquet hosted by the governor of Yunnan province, Xu Rongkai, wasn't just a standard parade of dim sum, however. The Chinese buffet in question consisted of an array of local delicacies, including fried grasshopper, maggot-like bamboo worms and glazed bees, reports British newspaper The Sun.
"The players would not eat any of the meal," dining hall manager Yang Li is quoted as saying.
Becks apparently didn't bug out over the unusual selection, instead choosing to simply avoid the snacks in favour of something a bit more familiar. "David Beckham was here for 40 minutes but he spent the whole time playing with his mobile phone," said Li. "He looked very serious."
Though a source told the newspaper the governor was "embarrassed" over the incident, team management explained it was a misunderstanding, insisting Real's strict diet prevented players from digging in to the grub.
