The marriage of David and Victoria Beckham is considered one of the most stable unions in the celebrity world. But in his upcoming autobiography My Side, Becks admits that career stress once led to a near-crisis with his wife.
According to excerpts cited in The Sun, his tense relationship with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson over the last year and a half caused him to shut down emotionally at home – which almost pushed Victoria to the brink of walking out. "As strong as me and Victoria are as a couple, there are boundaries and limits," David explained in an interview with the newspaper.
He recalled that at one point, just after the 2002 World Cup, he was unable to show his wife "any emotion at all". "I remember being low but not being able to do anything about it," he said. "Usually Victoria is one of the only people... who can actually snap me out of something - but not even she could do it that time."
However, Becks soon sought a solution. "When it did start to affect the family, that's when I did decide to sit down and do something about it. I decided to sit down with Victoria."
And now, it seems the couple are stronger than ever, enjoying their new start in Spain. "This is the happiest I have been for two years now, so I'm glad," he said recently.
And a good time was had by all at son Romeo's first birthday party in Madrid over the weekend, with both sets of grandparents on hand for the celebrations, held in the garden of the luxury hotel his parents are temporarily calling home.
